Digital Video Commander for Schools

The superior digital content delivery system combined with the most comprehensive content library

DVC Logo DVC Digital is a fully digital content distribution network featuring:

DVC Marcom Digital is compliant with emerging standards in Australia for the management and delivery of digital audio visual material in schools.

Free-to-air TV recording with DVC

The basic Digital Video Commander can support up to 5 TV capture cards. There are two different types of capture card. These are:
  • DVB-T Digital TV receiver - This card can receive digital TV broadcasts via a regular TV antenna. The card provides a standard-definition feed into the DVC system.
  • Analogue receiver/input card - This card has a regular analogue TV tuner covering the VHF and UHF bands. It also has Composite/SVHS video and stereo audio inputs to which you can connect an external device such as a VHS player, DVD player or video camera.

Scheduling capture is greatly facilitated by the online program guide, and simple editing tools allow you to eliminate advertisements and other irrelevant portions.

High capacity fully-indexed video clip repository ... & more

The Digital Video Commander server can be configured with:
  • 4 x 400 GB SATA disk drives
  • Software RAID giving a total storage capacity of 1200 GB.

The management software allows for a wide range of content. Content is any of the following:

  • Digital Video: MPEG1,2,4, ASF, ASX, WMV
  • Audio: MP3, WAV
  • Images: JPEG, GIF, PNG
  • Documents: Scrolling Text, Text, HTML, Power Point, Word, Excel, PDF
  • Live Content: Free to air TV (Digital & Analogue). Digital Camera Inputs, Analogue Video Inputs (DVD, VCR, Foxtel etc)

Media files may be organized into folders, much the same way as you organize files on your PC. In the same way, files can be copied, moved, renamed and deleted.

In addition, each file can be tagged with Meta-data to help sort files into categories. Files can also be assigned access restrictions to allow or prevent certain people from accessing them.

Files are seamlessly and invisibly distributed over multiple drives and servers - the user doesn't need to know where any file is physically stored.

Managing video copyright

Digital Video Commander allows organisations to be squeaky clean about their copyright management in two areas:
  • Users are not normally allowed to copy copyrighted content onto new media (that is, rip DVDs or videotapes). Digital Video Commander allows legacy media to be legally played on remote PCs via centralised players.
  • Free to air broadcasts in Australia can be rebroadcast or copied subject to agreement with Screenrights (www.screen.org) over royalty payments. Digital Video Commander keeps the logs and provides the administrative tools necessary to support such an arrangement.

All government educational institutions are currently covered by an agreement with Screenrights, as are most non-Government schools. Other government agencies are being progressively covered by these agreements. Retransmission agreements (eg hotels, hospitals) are negotiable with Screenrights.

The Logs Screen shows each video replay along with the start time and the name of the person who viewed it. You can use the drop-down lists at the top of the window to filter the list by date, user or action.

The Save button at the bottom of the window allows you to export the log to a CSV file which can be loaded into a database or spreadsheet.

Playing video over an IP network

Digital Video Commander provides two methods to play videos (or audio) over your network:
  • Via a PC - using a software-based player.
  • Via a set-top box.

In either case, the DVC source controller allows the end user to remotely control the centralised DVD players and video cassette players, as well as TV tuners.

An integrated video solution

Digital Video Commander provides a backbone for distribution and control of all types of video over your IP network.

For instance, you can ....

  • install audio visual controllers along with movement detectors in rooms and use them to turn off devices, especially projectors, in empty rooms. The savings in projector lamp costs soon repay the cost of the controller.
  • stream video from security IP cameras to any PC on the network, or capture for later viewing.
  • telecast important announcements and events to the network.
  • stream video from the Internet.
